Tension Blend herbal tincture in an amber dropper bottle from Mayim Farm

This is a traditional herbal blend we make here in small batches. It is built around herbs with a long history of folk use for tension, the wound-up kind that settles in the head, the neck, and the shoulders. It is a blend we keep on our own shelf.

What's in it

  • Black cohosh root, a woodland herb with deep roots in Native American and early American folk practice.
  • Lobelia leaf, a traditional relaxing herb, used in small amounts.
  • Skullcap leaf, a nervine herb traditionally used to support calm.
  • Valerian root, long used in folk medicine for rest and settling down.
  • Lavender flowers, traditionally used to relax and quiet things.
  • Feverfew leaf, one of the more studied herbs in Western herbalism, with centuries of traditional use behind it.
  • Cayenne pepper, a small warming amount that traditional formulas use to carry the rest of the blend.

How to use it

Take 1 to 2 dropperfuls in water as part of a wellness routine. For traditional feverfew use, many people take 1 dropperful daily on a consistent schedule. Feverfew is a long-game herb, and its traditional use builds over 4 to 6 weeks of daily use.

Read this before you use it

Several herbs in this blend need a little care, and we would rather tell you than have you find out on your own.

  • Black cohosh is not for use during pregnancy or nursing. Talk to your provider first if you have a liver condition or take medication that affects the liver.
  • Lobelia is traditionally used in small amounts. Taking more than the suggested amount can bring on nausea. Stay at the dropper amounts above.
  • Valerian makes some people drowsy. Try it at home before you take it and drive.
  • Cayenne is warming and can be sharp on an empty stomach.

If you are pregnant, nursing, taking prescription medication, or managing a health condition, talk to your healthcare provider before using this or any herbal preparation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is this blend traditionally used?

Each herb here has its own role in Western folk herbalism. Feverfew has been studied and is traditionally taken daily on a schedule. Skullcap, valerian, lavender, lobelia, and black cohosh all have long records of traditional use, and cayenne is the warming herb old formulas lean on. We make no medical claims about specific health outcomes.

Does the blend ever change?

We blend in small batches and we do adjust the formula from time to time as we learn more and as what we can source changes. The ingredient list on this page is the current formula. The list printed on your bottle is the formula in your bottle. If those two ever disagree, trust the bottle and let us know so we can fix the page.

Which size is right for me?

The 1 oz is a reasonable start if you are trying it for the first time or reaching for it now and then. The 2 oz lasts a good deal longer and is the better value if you are taking it daily.

Are these statements FDA-evaluated?

No. These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. We make no medical claims. Consult your healthcare provider before use, especially if pregnant, nursing, or taking medications.
