Frequently Asked Questions
What is a tincture?
A tincture is a concentrated herbal extract made by soaking plant material in alcohol and water. The alcohol pulls out the active compounds and preserves them. You take it in drops, added to water or juice.
Why alcohol and not glycerin?
Alcohol is a more effective solvent for most plant compounds and preserves extracts longer than glycerin. Glycerin tinctures are often used for children but extract a narrower range of active constituents.
How much alcohol is in a serving?
A standard 1 to 2 dropperful dose contains a very small amount of alcohol, roughly equivalent to a ripe banana. It is not enough to cause any intoxicating effect.
How long does a bottle last?
At 1 dropperful twice daily, a 1oz bottle lasts 2 to 3 weeks. A 2oz bottle lasts 5 to 6 weeks. The 2oz is the better value for daily users.
Do tinctures expire?
Properly stored alcohol tinctures are stable for several years. Keep them at room temperature away from heat and light, with the cap tight.
