US-grown mullein leaf, wildcrafted in south Alabama and dried slowly on screens. We pick every leaf ourselves. Each bag holds 21 g of cut loose leaf, enough for about 10 cups of tea. None of it comes through a supplier, and none of it is imported.
Mullein has been a lung and throat herb in folk practice for centuries. The oldest way to use it is still the simplest. Steep the leaf, breathe the steam while it steeps, then strain it well and drink it. Our mullein guide covers how people use it and what tradition says.
How to Brew Mullein Tea
- Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried leaf to an infuser or strainer.
- Pour 8 oz of just-boiled water over the leaves.
- Cover the cup and steep 10 to 15 minutes.
-
Strain carefully through a fine cloth. Mullein's tiny leaf hairs can irritate the throat if they get into the cup.
- Add honey if you like.
Most people drink 2 to 3 cups a day. Breathe the steam as it steeps.
Where Our Mullein Comes From
We pick every leaf in this bag ourselves, here in south Alabama. Years ago we brought in wild mullein and let it seed itself, and now we scatter the seed heads where we want new stands to come up. We also pick from our neighbors' clean fields.
We take leaf before the plant sends up a flower stalk, and then leave the stand alone to come back. Mullein has a season. We cut while the stands are making good leaf, some years right up to the first frost. When this year's leaf runs out, we wait for next year.
The leaf dries slowly on screens in our studio. Once it is dry we run it through a tobacco cutter and bag it here in Opp.
The Mullein and Vicks Trick
A lot of people find us through the mullein leaf and Vicks trick. That trick wraps a whole leaf, and the leaf in this bag is cut, so it is not the one for wrapping. It is the leaf for tea and steam. Our mullein guide walks through how people do the trick.
More Ways to Use Mullein
Rather take drops than brew a cup? The same leaf goes into our Mullein Extract. When you want more than mullein alone, our Chest Tea blends it with wild cherry bark, skullcap, and other herbs.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why do I need to strain mullein tea so carefully?
Mullein leaves have tiny fine hairs that can cause throat and mouth irritation if they make it into your cup. Always strain through a fine cloth or use a double strainer. This is the one step you don't want to skip.
How much loose leaf is in each bag?
Each bag holds three quarters of an ounce (21 g) of loose leaf, which brews roughly 10 cups depending on how strong you like it.
Is this whole leaf?
No. We pick the leaf by hand, and once it is dry we run all of our mullein through a tobacco cutter. We have never sold whole leaf.
Is your mullein grown in the US?
Yes. Every leaf is US-grown, wildcrafted here in south Alabama from our own stands and our neighbors' clean fields. We pick it ourselves, dry it on screens in our studio, and cut and bag it in Opp. Nothing is imported from Eastern Europe or anywhere else.
When do you harvest mullein?
We start in summer and keep cutting as long as the stands are making good leaf, some years right up to the first frost. We take leaf before the flower stalk goes up. Once this year's leaf is gone, we wait for next year.
How should I store dried mullein?
Keep it sealed and out of heat and light. A jar in a cupboard works fine.
