What is mullein used for?
Mullein leaf has a long history in folk practice across Europe and North America. The most common use is brewing the dried leaf as a tea. People also use mullein in herbal smoking blends, and as an alcohol extract taken by the dropper. We sell mullein as dried leaf, as an extract, as prerolls, and inside a few of our blended teas.
Is your mullein grown in the US?
Yes. We grow and wildcraft mullein on our farm and the land around it in Opp, Alabama. Most mullein sold in the United States is imported, usually from Eastern Europe. Ours is cut by hand here, dried on screens, and packed on the farm. You are buying it from the people who picked it.
How do I brew mullein tea?
Use about a teaspoon of dried mullein leaf per cup of boiling water and steep it for ten minutes. Then strain it carefully. Mullein leaves carry fine hairs that will irritate your throat if they end up in the cup, so we run ours through a fine cloth or a double strainer every time. Do not skip the straining.
What is the difference between mullein dried leaf and mullein extract?
The dried leaf is what you brew, and one 21 gram pack makes a lot of cups. The mullein extract is leaf steeped in alcohol, concentrated, and taken by the dropper, so it travels well and needs no kettle. Both come from the same plants we cut here. Which one suits you depends on whether you want the ritual of brewing.
What are mullein prerolls?
Mullein prerolls are our dried mullein leaf rolled into ready-made cones, with no tobacco and no nicotine in them. Mullein has been part of traditional smoking blends for a long time, valued for how mild and smooth it burns. Carole rolls ours by hand in small batches, from leaf we cut on our own farm.
When do you harvest mullein?
We cut mullein through the summer, taking leaf from second-year plants before they send up a flower stalk. It grows wild here, so we harvest a stand and then leave it alone to come back on its own. Our supply is limited to what one Alabama season gives us, and when it runs out we wait for next year.
