Turkey Tail (Trametes versicolor) is the one everybody has already seen. It grows in banded fans on fallen logs and dead wood in forests all over the world, including in the woods around us here in Alabama. Once you know it, you cannot walk through a wet stand of hardwood without spotting it.
We double extract ours in small batches.
What is turkey tail traditionally used for?
Turkey tail is taken as a tonic mushroom, steadily and over long stretches, the way tonic mushrooms have always been taken. It has been drunk as a tea in East Asian tradition for centuries. It is also one of the most heavily studied mushrooms in the world, which is a statement about the research, not a claim about you.
Why is turkey tail double extracted?
The beta-glucans in turkey tail are water soluble and the triterpenoids are not. Hot water alone gets you half the mushroom, alcohol alone gets you the other half, and a lot of products on the shelf only ever run one. We run both, hot water first and then alcohol, and combine them.
How do I take turkey tail extract?
Shake well. Take 1 to 2 dropperfuls of turkey tail extract in water, up to three times a day. It is traditionally taken every day over weeks and months rather than in a burst, so steadiness matters more than dose. The flavor is mild and woody and it goes into coffee without complaint.
What is in it?
Turkey tail mushroom (Trametes versicolor), double extracted in grain alcohol and distilled water. Fruiting body only. No fillers and no mycelium grown on grain.
Fruiting body or mycelium?
Fruiting body, and it matters. A lot of mushroom products on the market are mycelium grown on grain, which means what you are buying is mostly grain starch with a little mushroom in it. We use the actual mushroom. If a label does not say fruiting body, there is usually a reason.
Which size should I buy?
At twice daily, a 1 oz bottle runs about 2 to 3 weeks. The 2 oz is the better value if you are going to take it steadily, which is how turkey tail is meant to be taken.
Should I ask my doctor first?
Yes, and especially if you are being treated for anything or taking prescription medication. We grow plants and we extract mushrooms. We are not doctors, we make no medical claims, and nothing we sell is a substitute for medical treatment of any kind.
