Our moringa sales stopped in July. Every month this spring somebody bought dried leaf or powder, and then in July nobody did. When I went looking for the reason it did not take long to find.
Was moringa recalled in 2026?
Yes. Dietary supplements containing moringa leaf powder were recalled through 2026 after a multistate Salmonella outbreak. The FDA closed its investigation on July 22, 2026, reporting 131 people infected across 38 states, with 36 hospitalizations and no deaths. Illnesses started as early as August 22, 2025 and the last one began June 14, 2026. The CDC has declared that outbreak over.
Which moringa products were recalled?
The recalls covered Live it Up Super Greens powder, Why Not Natural Pure Organic Moringa Green Superfood capsules, TNVitamins moringa capsules and powder, and Doctor's Pride Complete Green Superfood Moringa capsules. A separate recall in May 2026 covered MOGO-brand Pure Moringa Oleifera capsules. All of them were sold online, through the companies' own sites and through Amazon, eBay, and Walmart.
What actually caused it?
The moringa leaf powder itself. FDA traced the contamination to imported moringa leaf powder from India, and found that two different brands, Live it Up and Why Not Natural, shared a manufacturer using the same powder. That is the part worth sitting with. One lot of bulk powder went into products carrying two unrelated labels, and neither company grew a single leaf of it.
Where does most moringa powder in the US come from?
Not from here. Most moringa sold in the United States is grown in India or Africa, dried and milled there, sold in bulk to a broker, and bottled by a company that puts its name on the label. FDA has since increased screening of imported moringa powder from India for Salmonella. By the time a bottle reaches a shelf it has usually passed through several hands, and no one of them saw the whole trip.
Where does your moringa come from?
Ours comes off trees we planted, in rows we walk, in Opp, Alabama. We have been growing moringa here since 2015. We cut the leaf by hand, Carole strips the leaves and loads the dehydrators, and it dries here in the studio before it is ground or bagged. We do not import it, we do not buy it in from suppliers, and no broker has ever touched it. The moringa I cut on July 28 came off the trees at 14.2 ounces dried, and Carole bagged 16.55 ounces on the 30th.
Do you test your moringa for Salmonella?
No, and I am not going to tell you otherwise. We do not send batches to a lab. What we have instead is a short chain, which is a different thing from a test and I want to be clear about the difference. Growing something ourselves does not make it sterile, and any raw agricultural product can carry contamination. What it does mean is that if you ask me where a bag came from, I can answer you with a date.
How do I know where my moringa came from?
Ask the company that sold it to you where it was grown and when it was harvested. A company that knows will tell you plainly. A company that buys bulk powder from a broker will answer with a country at best, and often with nothing at all. That question separates the two kinds of businesses faster than anything else on the label, including the word organic.
What do I do with the moringa in my cabinet?
Check it against the FDA's list before you use it. The recalled products have a long shelf life, so they can still be sitting in a cupboard from last year. FDA's advisory names every affected brand and lot number, and it is the right place to look rather than taking my word or anybody else's: FDA outbreak investigation, moringa leaf powder.
If you think you got sick from a supplement, call your doctor.
Our moringa is at Moringa Leaf Powder and across the whole moringa shelf, and there is more on the tree itself and how we harvest it on our moringa page.
